When to go
May-June and September have mild days, green grassland at Hortobágy, and the horse shows running on their full schedule. July-August is hot and the puszta offers little shade, though it's peak season for the park's programs. Winter is quiet and grey in the city, and much of Hortobágy's tourist infrastructure scales back or closes.

Debrecen sits in Hungary, so the country's broader seasonal pattern applies. April to June and September to October are the best months nationwide: mild temperatures, thinner crowds at the baths and on the Danube embankment, and the wine harvest around Eger and Villány falls in the September window. July and August are hot, and hot in Budapest means a lot of people in a fairly compact old town.
Jan-FebCold, sometimes snow. Thermal baths are genuinely better in winter, steam rising off outdoor pools, but coldest for walking Budapest's hills and squares.
Mar-AprMild and turning green, shoulder pricing on hotels, the Danube embankment gets walkable again without a coat.
May-JunComfortable warmth, long daylight, one of the best all-round windows before school-holiday crowds arrive.
Jul-AugPeak heat and peak crowds, Budapest's baths and ruin bars are busiest, book accommodation well ahead.
Sep-OctThe best stretch for wine country: grape harvest around Eger and Villány, cooling evenings, fewer tour groups at the baths.
Nov-DecCold and dark early, but Budapest's Christmas markets run from late November and the baths are at their most atmospheric with snow on the ground.
