What I actually paid

  • Eger is a one or two night town and there's no shame in that. I'd rather spend a relaxed evening working through a few cellars in the valley than pad the schedule with a third day of walking past the same baroque facades. Budget the rest of your trip elsewhere in the region.
  • Hungary uses the forint, not the euro, and Eger sees enough day-trippers from Budapest that some places will happily quote you in euros anyway. Always ask to pay in HUF; the euro conversion offered at the register or the card terminal is rarely in your favor.

How to spend less

  • Walk the Valley of the Beautiful Women instead of booking an organized wine tour; tastings cost the same either way and you choose your own pace
  • Dobó tér, Érsekkert, and the old town streets cost nothing and are most of what makes Eger worth the stop
  • Pay in forint, not euros, at card terminals; declining the terminal's offered euro conversion avoids a poor dynamic-conversion rate
  • A picnic lunch from the market on Csiky Sándor utca beats a sit-down meal near the square on price without much of a quality trade-off
