What I actually paid
- Irish rental car excess policies caught me off guard the first time. The standard excess on offer at the counter is large, and buying it down there costs noticeably more than sorting standalone excess insurance online before you fly. Do that part before you land, not after you've already got the keys in hand.
How to spend less
- Fitzgerald's Park and the Cork Public Museum are free and fill a couple of hours easily
- English Market stalls undercut sit-down restaurant prices for lunch by a wide margin
- Book a rental car for the West Cork/Kinsale/Cobh leg only rather than the whole trip if you're mostly staying in the city
- Cobh is reachable by train, cheaper and less stressful than driving and parking in a small harbour town
- Buy standalone rental car excess insurance online before arrival rather than the counter upsell; Irish rental excess amounts run unusually high and this is the single biggest avoidable cost on a Cork road trip
