What I actually paid
- The jaunting car through the Gap of Dunloe is a nice tradition but it's not a bargain, and cycling or walking the same route gives you more control over the pace and where you stop. I'd only pay for the pony trap if the walk itself isn't the point for you.
How to spend less
- Killarney National Park itself, plus Torc Waterfall and the park's walking trails, cost nothing and fill a full day
- Muckross House gardens are free even if you skip the paid house tour
- Cycle the Gap of Dunloe rather than paying for a jaunting car both ways; hire a bike in town
- Self-drive the Ring of Kerry rather than a coach tour if you're comfortable driving; it's the same road for free
- Book a rental car's excess insurance online before arrival rather than at the counter, where it's charged at a steep daily markup
