What I actually paid
- Ponte Vecchio at midday is one of the most photographed, least enjoyable spots in the city, wall-to-wall people moving at a shuffle. Cross it early morning instead and it's a completely different bridge.
How to spend less
- First Sunday of the month brings free entry to state museums including the Uffizi, Pitti, and Accademia, but expect the year's heaviest crowds that day
- A EUR 3-4 espresso at the bar, standing, costs less than half the same drink seated at a table with a view of the Duomo
- Mercato Centrale's ground floor food stalls run cheaper than any sit-down restaurant within sight of a major sight
- Church interiors, Ponte Vecchio, Piazzale Michelangelo, and most of Oltrarno's back streets cost nothing and are less crowded than the paid sights
