What I actually paid

  • Labeeb: the split between the hotel zone and Centro is bigger than it looks on a map. Fifteen minutes on the bus and the prices, the food, and the pace all change. Do at least one dinner downtown even if you're based on the strip.
  • Labeeb: don't get in a taxi without agreeing the fare first. It's standard practice there, not a red flag, but skipping it is how you overpay.

How to spend less

  • Stay in Centro and bus into the hotel zone rather than paying resort-strip room rates for a bed you're barely in
  • Eat where the market and taquerias are, not the hotel-zone restaurants aimed at walk-in tourists
  • Buy Chichen Itza and cenote tickets independently instead of through an all-day tour markup if you're comfortable driving or busing
  • Use the R-1/R-2 public bus instead of taxis for anything along the hotel zone strip
