How to spend less
- Park-only tickets (Pena, Monserrate) run about a third less than palace-inclusive ones and still get you the grounds most people photograph
- The National Palace's gardens are free even when the palace itself isn't
- Walk downhill from Pena or the Moorish Castle back toward town instead of queuing for the 434 both ways; it's mostly downhill and cuts the bus wait in half
- Sintra's pastry shops sell travesseiros and queijadas for a couple of euros each, which is a cheaper lunch base than any sit-down restaurant near the palaces
