What I actually paid

  • The bus up from Chiang Mai is long but scenic and much cheaper than flying for the distance covered.

How to spend less

  • Rent a scooter instead of hiring drivers for in-town temples; it's a compact area
  • Skip the Hall of Opium if money's tight, it's the most skippable paid sight in the region
  • Eat at the night bazaar food stalls over the sit-down restaurants nearby
  • Group the Golden Triangle, Chiang Saen, and Mae Salong into one hired-driver day instead of three separate trips
