How to spend less

  • Book intercity sleeper buses at the Phuong Trang (Futa) counter rather than through your hotel; the hotel markup on the Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City runs is routine.
  • Take the airport shuttle van instead of a fixed-rate taxi. Buy the ticket yourself near baggage claim, because hotels quote airport transfers well above the going 200,000 VND rate.
  • Drink coffee at the roadside farm cafes out along Cau Dat and Trai Mat, where a cup runs a third of centre prices and the beans were grown on the slope you are sitting on.
  • Eat at the market food court upstairs at Cho Da Lat for lunch instead of the night market. Same dishes, local prices, no tourist quote.
  • Share a Langbiang jeep with whoever is waiting at the gate. The 360,000 VND is charged per vehicle, not per person, so a full car cuts it to about 60,000 each.
  • Buy your warm layer at the night market knitwear racks for 150,000-250,000 VND rather than carrying a jacket around tropical Vietnam for two weeks.
