How to spend less

  • Skip the Old Town ticket booths on the outer streets and use the ones closer to the river bridges, prices and rules are the same but queues are shorter
  • Eat where the tailors and shop staff eat, a block or two off Tran Phu and Bach Dang, not on the main tourist strip
  • Rent a bicycle through your guesthouse rather than a street stall, it's usually a few thousand VND cheaper and they'll fix a flat for free
  • Buy lanterns and souvenirs at the daytime market stalls, not the evening riverside ones aimed at photo-taking tourists
  • Negotiate basket boat and tailor prices before starting, both markets expect it
