May and June, plus September, give the best mix of long daylight and manageable crowds; July and August add heat and the year's heaviest coach traffic on top of an already busy town. Winter (November through February) is genuinely quiet and atmospheric around the Christmas market, with short days and a real chance of cold, damp weather.

May-September brings the warmest weather and the longest daylight for canal walks and square-side terraces, with July-August busiest and priciest, especially in Bruges.
