May, June, and September give the best mix of long daylight and manageable crowds without Bruges-level congestion at any time of year. July and August bring warmth and outdoor terrace season along the Graslei but also the Gentse Feesten street festival crowds in mid-July. Winter is quiet and the Christmas market around Sint-Baafsplein is genuinely atmospheric.

Ghent sits in Belgium, so the country's broader seasonal pattern applies. May-September brings the warmest weather and the longest daylight for canal walks and square-side terraces, with July-August busiest and priciest, especially in Bruges. April, May, September, and October balance mild weather with noticeably thinner crowds and are the best overall window. Christmas markets make late November-December worthwhile despite the cold and short days.
