What I actually paid
- Every visitor gets caught by the tax at some point. Ontario's combined sales tax is 13%, and it is never included in the price on the menu or the shelf tag, it shows up at the till. Budget for it rather than being surprised by it on the first bill.
How to spend less
- A TTC day pass (CAD 13.50) beats paying single fares after about four rides, and covers subway, streetcar, and bus
- Toronto Islands are free once you're on the ferry: pack a lunch and spend the day on the beach instead of paying for the small Centre Island amusement park
- St. Lawrence Market and the food halls at Kensington Market both beat sit-down restaurant prices for the same quality, and neither charges admission
- High Park, the Beaches boardwalk, and most of the waterfront trail are free and fill a full day without a single ticket
