When to go
December to April is the dry season and the easiest time to be in San Jose, with clear mornings good for day trips to Poas or Irazu (both often cloud over by early afternoon regardless of season). May to November is wetter, with afternoon downpours most days, but mornings are usually still workable for sightseeing.

San Jose sits in Costa Rica, so the country's broader seasonal pattern applies. December through April is the dry season on the Pacific side and the easiest window for road trips and beach time, but it's also peak price and peak crowds. May through November is green season: cheaper, greener, with wildlife often more active, but afternoon downpours are a daily rhythm and some roads get rougher. The Caribbean coast runs on a different pattern and can be wet even when the Pacific is bone dry.
