May, June, and September give the best combination of heat, sea temperature, and manageable crowds. July and August push past 30C, the Calanques get seriously overcrowded, and much of the city's own restaurant scene partially shuts for the French August holiday period. Winter is mild and quiet but many boat trips and some Calanques access stop or thin out.

Marseille sits in France, so the country's broader seasonal pattern applies. May, June, and September give the best weather-to-crowd ratio. July and August are hot, packed, and the month when many small businesses and even some Paris restaurants close for owner vacation. Shoulder season (April, October) is quieter and cheaper.
