April to June and September to October have the best weather-to-crowd ratio, mild days and manageable lines. July and August are hot, packed with other tourists, and this is also when a real share of small restaurants and independent shops shut for their own August break. December has Christmas markets and short days but thinner crowds at major sites outside the holidays themselves.
