When to go

March to early October is the drier stretch, best for the summit climb and island trips. November to February brings the northeast monsoon: heavier rain, rougher seas, more days when boats to the islands get cancelled. Late May marks Kaamatan, the Kadazan-Dusun harvest festival, worth timing a visit around if you want to see it.

Kota Kinabalu sits in Malaysia, so the country's broader seasonal pattern applies. Malaysia is equatorial and hot year-round, so timing is about rain, not temperature. Peninsular Malaysia's west coast (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Malacca, Langkawi) is driest December to February; the east coast monsoon runs roughly November to February. Sabah gets rain year-round with no sharply defined dry season.
