When to go

June through August is driest and busiest with regional visitors. December to February brings the Northeast Monsoon with more rain, mostly short afternoon downpours rather than washed-out days. Weekday visits avoid the crowds that fill Jonker Street on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights when the night market runs. Ramadan and the days around Hari Raya shift shop and market hours; some Chinatown businesses close for a stretch around Chinese New Year too.

Malacca sits in Malaysia, so the country's broader seasonal pattern applies. Malaysia is equatorial and hot year-round, so timing is about rain, not temperature. Peninsular Malaysia's west coast (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Malacca, Langkawi) is driest December to February; the east coast monsoon runs roughly November to February. Sabah gets rain year-round with no sharply defined dry season.
