What I actually paid
- I'd budget a full extra day before I ever trusted a flight into Gilgit again. The road is slower but it always gets there; the plane sometimes just doesn't fly.
How to spend less
- Share jeep hire with other travelers at your guesthouse rather than booking a private car for day trips to Attabad Lake or Passu
- Eat at Karimabad bazaar cafes serving local Hunza dishes (apricot soup, walnut cake, diram phitti) instead of guesthouse tourist menus
- Skip guided tours of the forts and hire the on-site guide directly, cheaper than a package booked in Islamabad
- Carry cash from Gilgit or Islamabad; ATMs in Karimabad are limited and sometimes out of service, and withdrawal fees add up
