A mid-range day in the city: TRY 3,500 hotel room (split or solo), TRY 70 for a couple of İZBAN/metro rides on an İzmirim Kart, TRY 500 for lunch at an inexpensive restaurant, TRY 900 for a proper dinner, TRY 300 grazing Kemeraltı Bazaar, plus a bit of transit and small purchases. What I actually paid
- No high-speed train reaches Izmir, and that surprises people who've just come off the Istanbul-Ankara line. Budget the bus or the short flight and don't assume a fast rail option exists.
- The ferry across the bay to Karşıyaka is one of the better cheap things to do in any Turkish city. It costs about the same as a bus ride and gives you the skyline for free.
How to spend less
- Kadifekale, the Kordon, Asansör and most of Kemeraltı cost nothing; save the ticket budget for Ephesus and one other paid site rather than several
- İzmirim Kart covers İZBAN, metro, bus and ferry with a transfer discount, buy one on day one instead of paying cash fares each ride
- Take the regional İZBAN or TCDD train to Selçuk instead of an organized Ephesus tour bus, it's a fraction of the price and runs multiple times a day
- Eat at Kemeraltı Bazaar stalls rather than Alsancak's waterfront restaurants for lunch, the price gap is real
