What I actually paid
- Gondolas are a once thing, not a transport thing. They're fun for twenty minutes and priced accordingly. A traghetto crossing the Grand Canal costs a couple of euros and is basically the same boat with a fraction of the theater.
How to spend less
- Drink and eat standing at the bar (al banco) in any bacaro; sitting down, especially near San Marco, can double or triple the price for the identical plate.
- Skip the vaporetto pass unless you're actively island-hopping; most sightseeing days in the historic center need zero rides.
- Public drinking-water fountains (fontanelle) are all over the city and the tap water is safe; refill instead of buying bottled water.
- Museums under the Musei Civici network offer combined passes that beat buying single tickets if you're doing three or more sites.
- Buy Murano glass on Murano, not at San Marco souvenir shops charging a tourist-zone markup on the same pieces.
