What I actually paid
- It works better than Kyoto as a base for a longer trip. Hotels cost less, the trains are quick, and Kyoto and Nara are both short rides away.
How to spend less
- ICOCA over single-ride tickets if you're taking more than 3-4 rides a day
- Kuromon Ichiba for lunch instead of a restaurant; standing-and-eating stalls run 500-800 yen a plate
- Shinsekai kushikatsu is genuinely cheaper than Dotonbori's version of the same dish
- convenience store (konbini) breakfasts run under 500 yen and are actually good
- Osaka Amazing Pass only pencils out if you're hitting Osaka Castle plus 2 more paid sights same day
